Stamfordham Women’s Institute – 90 years old and still going strong!
In October 1918, inspired by the formation of a new group for women, Stamfordham formed their branch of the WI. Much of the idea behind the WI was education, learning about agriculture – as so many members would be country women – and skills for running an everyday home. Of course there was a social side, which enabled those who lived some distance from neighbours, to spend a couple of hours in company with other women away from the family. Ninety years on, with improved transport and access to friends and shops, we are even more geared up to social time. However we fill in our everyday lives, it is still good to come together in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere with like -minded people. As time has progressed we have an ever growing choice of how we spend our free time. Unfortunately, more choices have taken a toll on the WI, but we are still here, still trying to educate and entertain and bring together women in our community. This is an ideal vehicle for introducing new comers to the members of the community and a network of what goes on. Not just ‘Jam and Jerusalem’, we have some hands on workshops, a couple of outings to places of interest and interesting talks and presentations. Above all, we have friendship. This is one thing that has not changed in the last 90 years. To celebrate this incredible landmark, we are having a birthday party in the Village Hall on Saturday 11th. October, 2008, which will be shared with members from other local WI’s. For further details, contact any W.I. member or the numbers above.
